Merry Christmas 2013 from the Attwood 5!

Dear Family and Friends,

Well, I can still call it our Christmas letter, as I sit here writing it on Christmas dayJ  For those in Canada and the US, it is only Christmas Eve, so we have scraped in under the wire!  What a busy year it has been and it has flow by so quickly.  The blog I had planned to keep up regularly hasn’t been updated in almost two years!
The highlight for us as a family this year was our trip back to Canada in July.  For the boys and Nelson it was the first trip back in almost 3 years and it had been long enough to feel that Australia is now home, but it was also so good for them to be reunited with lots of our family and friends.  The 16 days flew by in a non-stop run, but it was a joy to spend time with each of our families and to be able to visit Parkcrest and Westview Chapels, with Nelson having the opportunity to share the ministry that the Lord has given us here in Australia.  For me it was an amazing blessing to have all five of us Chandler siblings together for a few days at Carol’s on the Island.  It’s a rare opportunity for us all to be together with Mom and Dad and we enjoyed the time and were able to make some precious memories and get lots of photos!  We were also able to spend time with Nelson’s family in Abbotsford and Surrey and for the cousins to get reacquainted!  There is never enough time to see everyone and there were those we just couldn’t catch up, but maybe next time!
In September we celebrated one year of Casey Bible Church here in Berwick.  It has been an amazing year, seeing God bless and provide for this little work.  We have now grown to over 60 people and  the ministries have grown to include a small group study, a ladies Bible study, a men’s leadership study, a men’s prayer meeting, a youth group and a Sunday School.  It is exciting to see the spiritual growth in many of the people and to see them exercising their gifts in ministry, many they didn’t realise they had!  One of the joys of being a small group is that each one is necessary and needed for the church to function.  We are working on outreach plans for 2014 and pray that we will start to see our neighbourhood reached for Christ and becoming part of the body of CBC.  Our other major prayer request is that the Lord will raise up an eldership this year.  At this point in time Nelson carries the weight of teaching and preaching, as well as counselling and visitation ministries.  We believe strongly that the Lord would have that work distributed amongst elders and deacons, but have been careful to wait on His leading for those men to be burdened to take on those roles and for the body to recognize the shepherds.  At the moment the men of the church all meet on a monthly basis as a leadership group to pray together and make the decisions for the church, but we would love to see more defined groups of men to share the responsibilities for the practical and spiritual needs in the church.  Nelson is just over halfway through his Bachelor of Theology and will go back in February for another two courses towards finishing his degree.  In many ways he has been “thrown in at the deep end” of ministry, but It keeps us on our knees and completely dependent on the Lord, as in our own wisdom and strength we are completely inadequate for the task!  The Lord is so gracious and has blessed us so much with this amazing group of people.  They are our Australian family and we truly love each other.  Please pray for continued unity and love for us as we grow in numbers.  It is something that people coming in to visit are impressed with right away and we pray that that will continue always.  We have also been so convicted that we be a praying church, with small groups praying at all of our Bible studies and beginning each Sunday (while the Sunday School is running) with the men and women praying in groups for the first half hour.  It has bound us together and it is so incredible to see God answering our prayers.  Please continue to pray for strength and wisdom for Nelson as, unlike most occupations, the work of a pastor/teaching elder is a 24-7/365 job!  It is a tremendous blessing and something he would never trade, but the weight of the responsibility can bring many sleepless nights and long days.  We have been blessed by a small salary from the church and we are so thankful for it, and trust the Lord to supply our needs.

For the kids it has also been a busy year.  Early in February we realised that for Jono going into Year 12 at his public high school was not going to be a healthy choice, as he had been experiencing some very hurtful bullying by a group of his “friends”.  We decided to allow him to do distance education here at home and ultimately he ended up doing half of his Year 12 courses last year.  This February he will return to the school to finish his final two Year 12 courses and the second half of his pre-college course in residential drafting.  He got a job in March at Woolworths, one of our major grocery stores, and works every Tuesday and Saturday there.  He also had an opportunity at Easter to be a part of the Melbourne Passion Play, playing a Roman soldier.  It was neat to see the whole life of Christ presented in a park, with several hundred people watching for two performances!  Please pray that Jono will have a sense of God’s direction for his future as he finishes Year 12 in 2014.  As a side note, about a month ago he received a call one Sunday morning from the ringleader of the bullies, who had called to apologise for how he had treated Jono.  It was a very humbling and growing experience for Jono and a blessing for him to be able to forgive him and close the chapter on a very painful experience.  Our nearly-18-year-old (next week) has grown to be taller than Nelson, with a love and passion for singing, and we can hardly believe how fast time has gone!

Cameron started the year at the public high school in Year 9, however in July we visited a Christian school, Chairo, here in Pakenham, and began to prayerfully consider sending him there.  A small, country school that is completely focused on Christ in all areas of education was exactly what we wanted for him, but we were unsure how it would fit into the budget.  As it turned out, the staff were also praying for a way for him to attend and we were offered an amazing price to be able to enroll him for the rest of the year, so he started there after mid-year break in July and has loved the school and is thriving.  In February he will go  back to start Year 10 and is looking forward to doing a Year 11 music class as one of his electives.  He continues in piano lessons and has self-taught himself guitar in the last year.  He is a very disciplined boy and works really hard to achieve at school and in music.  Turning 15 this week, his sense of humour keeps us laughing every day and it is a joy to see him growing in his walk with the Lord.

Braeden just last week finished his primary school years at Berwick Fields.  He has had a great three years there, with amazing aides working with him, helping him to completely integrate with the mainstream kids.  As he heads to Year 7 we face another change.  Because of his autism, it has become apparent that mainstream high school is not a good option for him.  A new specialty K-12 school is set to open in February near where we are now living and we have enrolled him there for Year 7.  We have met with the principal of the school, who is a wonderful woman, with many years’ experience in special needs schools.  Unfortunately there are a lot of unknowns as the school is brand new and nothing is yet established, but we are going ahead, trusting that the Lord will give us wisdom and will continue to provide for Braeden, as He always has.  Please pray for us and for Braeden, as this will be a big adjustment for him and for us.  He usually adjusts better and faster than we do!, but it is still going to be a big change.  He is a character, who loves his computer and his inventions.  It’s amazing what he creates out of boxes, Lego or PowerPoint!  He loves to help Nelson set up the church on a Sunday morning and he has a special place in the hearts of all the aides and teachers who have taught him over the years.  He is very loving and we are so thankful for that!

For me, Heather, it has been a busy year too!  I have continued to work at home doing medical transcription on a full-time basis.  I have also had the joy of leading a ladies Bible study fortnightly, going through a study in the book of Hebrews.  At church I am usually behind the scenes organizing our many lunches, either at church our in our home.  I have just received confirmation this week that I have been hired by Casey Hospital (our local hospital) in the Medical Records Department as a casual employee.  After many job applications and several interviews, it was awesome to finally get a job and I am really looking forward to having set hours.  The work I do at home can often take me well into the evening and sometimes even Saturdays to complete, and that has been a struggle.  I am looking forward to going to work, then coming home to be a mom and wife!  Please pray for me as there will be a lot to learn.  The Southern Health hospitals are all across Melbourne and it is a huge organization to work for.  I will have a month of training before they “let me loose” and then will be on call, but it sounds as if there is a huge demand at this point, so I should have pretty steady work.

As most of you know, in September we were also able to move into our own house, after almost 3 years in a rental home.  We are loving living here and keep pinching ourselves to make sure we aren’t dreaming!  It is such a blessing from the Lord and such a joy to be able to use it for Him, often having the church over for BBQs and for other events.  It is nice to feel a bit more settled and not to have a rental inspection every 6 months!

Well, what I had planned to be a short letter, has turned out to be very long indeed, but hopefully will give you an idea of the highlights of our year.  The Lord is so faithful and has blessed us abundantly in 2013, and we are looking forward to what He has for us to do in 2014!  Please continue to pray for us, as we do for you.  We may be far apart in distance, but you each hold a special place in our hearts!

With our love,
Nelson, Heather, Jono, Cam and Brady xox

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2012!!

Okay, so I'm not the greatest at keeping up with this blog thing!  When we first got here there was so much to report and so many new adventures, but yesterday was 14 months since we arrived and life feels pretty much routine most days.  We didn't send out Christmas cards this year as all the international stamps really add up, but thank you to so many of you that sent us cards and photos of your families.  A card from home in the mailbox is such a welcome sight and we love to catch up on your news!

We had a lovely Christmas this year, with Nelson's parents arriving on December 3 to spend 3 1/2 weeks with us.  It was an overwhelming feeling to hug family from home and I didn't realise how much I missed it until we met them at the airport!  We have met many people and have some good friends, but it is wonderful to be with family who have known you all your life!  It was fun to tour around Melbourne with them and to relive a lot of their happy memories of growing up here.  Nelson spent an afternoon downtown with his dad walking around the neighbourhood where Dad grew up and even touring the inside of his grandma's house.  We took them up to Sovereign Hill, to the beach at Phillip Island and to our favourite Dandenong Ranges park to see the birds.

Christmas came and went quickly.  Somehow with the hot weather and the start of summer vacation, Christmas is less of an event than it is in Canada.  The kids still get excited, but it seemed to sneak up on me, and Mom and I were scrambling to get the shopping done the week before!  The stomach flu hit us all during the week of Christmas, so that put a bit of a damper on things, but we managed to enjoy Christmas day together and had a lovely Christmas dinner at John and Lyn Baker, our pastor's, home.  I saved my turkey cooking until the 27th, Cameron's 13th birthday.

On December 27 we had the joy of meeting Nelson's cousin Priscilla and her husband, Rick, who travelled down from New South Wales to meet Nelson's parents with Matthew, Priscilla's brother.  After 30+ years of being out of the Exclusive Brethren, it was such a thrill for Mom and Dad to meet a niece and nephew and to be called "Aunt and Uncle" for the first time.  We have shared with a few of you how Priscilla, who is a nurse, picked up a tract that talked about the difference between religion and a real relationship with Christ.  She realised the truth of the Gospel message and was saved.  She and Rick left the Exclusives and have been attending a Church of Christ for the last few years.  They have recently moved to Port Macquarie, north of Sydney, and Matthew is living with them.  Please pray for them as they search the Word to work out how to live as Christians and how to determine truth from the errors that they have been brought up with.  We wish we could see them more, but unfortunately it is a 15 hour drive to where they live, so our visits will not be too frequent, but we will keep in touch through email and skype.  Meeting them and hearing their story has renewed our burden for Nelson's family who are still in the Exclusives, which was one of the reasons we felt the Lord leading us here to Australia.  Many years ago the teaching was still sound and the Gospel was still preached among them, but in the last 50 years it has become a cult, following a world leader and whatever new laws he creates.  The people inside live in fear of being cut off from all their family if they do not follow the endless rules enforced upon them.  They do have Bibles, but many do not read or study for themselves, relying on the leaders to teach them.  Our hearts break to hear the stories and to realise that so many inside do not know the Lord and the freedom and joy that comes from truly walking with Him.  From a human standpoint it seems like an impossible task to reach them with the Gospel, but with Christ all things are possible and we would ask you to pray that we will be given wisdom and courage to take any opportunities He gives us to reach out to them.  Nelson has two uncles and an aunt, as well as a myriad of cousins and second-cousins still in.  Pray that Priscilla and Rick's testimony will impact them as well, as the church has been completely stumped by their leaving under their own conviction.  No matter how hard they try to find a "reasonable excuse" for it, they haven't found one, so there are bound to be those who are wondering about it!

Now, to update you on the family:

Nelson is out of school until the end of January, so is busy working with John, our pastor, doing construction at the moment.  His elbow is keeping up with the work, but the body aches at the end of the day are a good reminder that the career change to ministry is still the best idea!  He is really missing school and can't wait to get back to the studying.  He will do a summer intensive for a week at the end of January and then will start back full-time in his second year by the middle of February.  He had the opportunity to preach at our church in November and, although it was very daunting, he did really well.  He has been booked to speak next Sunday at a Baptist church where one of his professors goes, so he is looking forward to that and enjoying the studying.  We are both really enjoying Grace Community Church and are trying to find our place to serve there.  I have sung on the worship team a few times and really enjoy it, although find it stretches my courage!  Having grown up in small churches, we both have a desire to be used and to be involved, so please pray that we will find areas where we are needed and can serve the Lord.

I continue to be busy with typing work here at home.  I have enjoyed a week off over Christmas, but will start back tomorrow.  I am looking at the possibility of finding a doctor's office job near home, as I find being in the house quite isolating and that the work often encroaches on all times of the day and evening!  However, for now I have steady work and will continue to pray that the Lord will give me direction in terms of work.

Jonathan (or Jono, as he prefers to be called), turned 16 on Friday.  So hard to believe that he has grown to be 6'2" and taller than Dad!  Seems like yesterday that he was just a toddler!  He is going into Grade 11 in February and loves drawing and music, and is very gifted in both.  He doesn't at this point have a clear idea of what he would like to do after high school, so would appreciate your prayers for direction.

Cam turned 13 and is heading into Grade 8 in February.  We were thrilled when he received an Academic Achievement award at the end of the year, having skipped up to Grade 7 when we arrived!  Grandma and Grandpa were able to be at the awards ceremony, so it was a special evening!  He also loves to draw cartoons and read.
Cam and a not-so-pleased Braeden! (too many hours travelling in the car!)
Brady is 10 and going into Grade 5 in February.  He did really well in Grade 4 and exceeded expectations with all the adjustments he had to make in his new school and new life here.  He had an absolutely awesome assistant with him all year from England and she will continue on in Grade 5 with him as well.  She is just what he needs, loving and kind, but firm and no-nonsense!  The Lord is so good and continues to bring the right people into our lives!

I think that about covers all of our news for now.  January will be a long month with the kids on holiday and both of us working!  The summer weather has certainly arrived, with temperatures around 38 or so this week.  Fortunately in Melbourne we get mixed weather, so are looking forward to 21 on Wednesday and rain!  Can you tell I'm not a summer weather girl?!

We took the kids away over Friday and Saturday to see the 12 Apostles on the Great Ocean Road - a dream of mine since before leaving Canada!  It was a long drive, but so worth it.  God's artistry is amazing and so unique!  We spent one night in Warrnambool and enjoyed a day playing on the beach before heading home Saturday night.  The student income doesn't allow for more elaborate holidays at this point, but we are so grateful for the times we can get away and just be together.  The beach is one of our favourite places to be, so we go as often as we can!

Yes, the water really is that colour!!

Well, time to sign off, but we wish you all a blessed 2012!  We are so thankful for all your prayers and love and miss you all!

Spring Break

Well, it amazes me how fast the weeks fly by between school breaks here!  Term 3 is officially over and tomorrow is the beginning of Term 4 for the boys.  We can hardly believe that in just over three weeks we will have been here in Australia for a whole year!  In some ways we feel like we were in Canada yesterday and in other ways it seems much longer.
The highlight for Nelson this term was his missions trip to Tasmania.  As a missions-based school, MST sends all their full-time students away for a week in September every year to do outreach work in different areas.  I found the idea of him being away from us for eight days more than a little intimidating, but many were praying for us and we got through the week smoothly.  I will get him to do a blog one of these days to give you all the details, but suffice it to say, he thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity and fell in love with the beautiful state of Tasi!  I look forward to the chance to visit there one day..
Braeden got to go on his class trip in September also - quite a leap of faith for Nelson and I to send him, but his EA accompanied him with the class to a lovely camp about 1 1/2 hours north of here, where they spent 3 days and 2 nights.  He did really well, after many reassurances of "it's okay Mommy, you'll be fine while I'm gone"! and packing and repacking his suitcase for a month before leaving!  We all really missed him as it had been his first time away without us and the house was extraordinarily quiet without him.  He has a lovely class though, who really try to include him in everything and treat him like part of the gang.  Such a blessing!
The boys have been home for their two week spring break and we have spent a lot of time just around home, but did get out for a couple of outings, north to Ballarat, our favourite historical town, and due east to Golden Beach on the east coast of Victoria.  Our favourite thing to do here is just to head out in the car and explore a new place we haven't seen before.  Everything is new to us and the beaches are amazing!  We went to Golden Beach with the intention of playing in the sand and maybe getting our feet wet, as it is still cool weather, but the draw of the ocean was just a little too strong and before we knew it Jonathan and Brady were soaked!  Next time we will go prepared!
Church at Grace Community is going well.  I have recently joined the worship team - a long-time dream of mine!  Nelson is busy with the pack-up/set-up team and being involved in evangelism.  He has really missed preaching and loved the opportunity to preach in Tasmania twice, but we know that God has a plan and will use us in His time.  For me, I am so thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to just soak up and learn more of God's word through Bible Study Fellowship, great teaching at Grace and our home group study, The Truth Project.
Well, I don't think there is much more news to share.  We think of you all often and miss you more than you know.  Skype is great and a life-saver in so many ways, but it's not the same as a hug!  Till next time....

Wilson's Promontory...

Hard to believe it's been almost two months since our last post.  Life has settled into a routine of work, church & school and somehow I don't get as much time to take photos or get out exploring.  I have become used to the accents and the scenery, but every once in a while I stop and smile when I see something I would not see in Canada.  We headed out on an adventure this week while the kids were out of school on their winter break and we had a beautiful winter's day to enjoy, and I had a few of those surreal moments...

We drove about two hours south to a national park called Wilson's Promontory.  The southern part of the park was closed due to flood damage from earlier this year, but we enjoyed exploring an area in the northern section of the park where the kangaroos and emus roam free in the wild.  I don't think I'll ever get used to seeing a kangaroo hopping around in front of me on the grass or lazing in the sun....

Snoozing in the sun!
After an hour of watching kangaroos and emus, we headed to another area of the park for a walk through a lovely section of forest where the fires had been through in 2009.  It's amazing to see the charred tree trunks from what must have been a horrific fire and the new growth coming up..

The kids have just finished their second two-week holiday of the year, with the second semester starting next week.  The week before holidays Jonathan spent his mandatory Grade 10 week doing work experience for a Christian friend of ours who owns a pie shop.  Getting him there for 5:00 am every day was a challenge for Nelson and I, but the experience was a great one for him.  There is a lot of pressure put on kids in Grade 10 to sort out their career path and he has felt a bit overwhelmed by it all, but we are just praying that the Lord will give him a clear sense of direction.  Cameron continues in Grade 7 and seems to be doing well, having skipped Grade 6.  He was chosen as one of two in his grade to compete in a district spelling bee in August, so that was quite an accomplishment!  Brady is doing really well in Grade 4 and loves his class.  The Lord has given him a wonderful teacher and teacher's aide, who have him "figured out" and challenge him every day.  The school finally got a response to their funding request for him, which unfortunately was much less than he needs, but thankfully they have not changed anything for this year and will re-apply at the end of the year for more aide time for next year.  We are so grateful for such a great school and a vice principal who is a very caring person.
Aussie architecture - love it!
It's been a quiet two weeks for them, mostly at home with me working, but they enjoyed a day out with Dad this week, taking a train ride into Melbourne and exploring the Melbourne library and the museum, and taking a tram ride around the city.  We all went to see Cars 2 last night for Brady, who enjoyed it immensely!  It will be good to be back to routine tomorrow however, with a little space between the kids!
Waiting for the tram in the middle of the street in Melbourne!
Our journey has taken another turn and we start a new chapter this week, with Nelson going to school full time at Melbourne School of Theology (MST).  For so many of our years of marriage we have felt the Lord leading us towards ministry on a bigger scale and Nelson's dream has always been to study theology and use the gifts the Lord has given him.  Financially it has always seemed like an impossible dream, but the Lord has been closing doors and opening new ones during our time here.  The injuries to Nelson's elbow have proven to be more long-term than we first expected and they have made carpentry work very difficult and painful, with more damage being caused the longer he continues to work.  Although university education is no longer free for Aussie citizens, the government has made it much more affordable and accessible than it was in Canada.  We have been blessed to meet an amazing Christian financial planner here, who is working along side us to give us guidance as we work through all the details.  We truly see the Lord's hand in it all and we are trusting Him as we go forward.  It will take three years of full-time studies for Nelson to get his Honours Bachelor of Theology, at which point he hopes to start teaching undergrads while continuing his studies.  We are open to whatever path the Lord leads us to, but at this point that is the direction we are heading.  The studies are a joy for Nelson, but re-educating at 41 and the changes to us as a family will have it's challenges.  We covet  your prayers as we start the journey!
Who knew???! - wish I'd seen the sign sooner....!
I continue to keep busy with transcription work here at home.  I am very blessed to have steady work from an online company, enabling me to work my own hours and be available for the kids here at home.  The distractions of home can be challenging however, so I appreciate your prayers as I try to get more disciplined with my time!  Ideally I would like to just be working during school hours so that I can be a mom and wife the rest of the time, so have to get more organised!

Thank you all for your prayers for us last weekend, as we missed being in Canada for my family reunion.  It was so hard not to be with our loved ones there, but they had a wonderful time celebrating my parents' 60th wedding anniversary.  We had a chance to have a Skype visit with them all and were once again so grateful for the wonders of Skype!  Somehow it makes life a little more bearable when you can actually see family!

Well, that's about all the news for now.  We miss you all and think of you often! xo

What lies beyond the hill is unknown, but He holds it all in His hand and there is no place we'd rather be!

Back by Popular Demand...

Well, it's with much fear and trepidation that I have decided to try this again...  I had thought I wouldn't do any more blogging, but I have had a number of you ask me to reconsider, so here goes.  I will only be sending this address to you each specifically and it will not be linked to Facebook or any other web page.  I am also determined, with the Lord's help, to keep it positive so that there will never be any cause for concern about who reads it!  The Lord had to teach me a hard lesson in sharing my personal feelings over cyberspace and it has been a painful few weeks of trying to make amends with people who I have come to love and would never have wanted to hurt in any way.  I'm so thankful for a merciful, gracious Father, who forgives me and picks me back up when I fall flat!

The cold weather has really descended upon us here, amazing all the local inhabitants yet again!  We certainly seem to have brought Vancouver temperatures with us and most days it's colder here in Berwick than it is in Vancouver.  There has been a lot of rain and with the rain comes the invasion of ants and mice!  We fell into bed exhausted last Friday night, only to realise that we had company in our bedroom!  At 11:30 pm I was at the local grocery store buying mouse traps and we ended up having a rather uncomfortable sleep on couches, with the mouse barricaded in our room, surrounded by four mouse traps!  By morning he was caught and my husband, my hero, had removed him from the house.  That same night I had left some pots to soak in the kitchen sink, only to return a few hours later to find my entired counter top, sink and nearby cabinets covered in ants.  The thought of running for the next plane without looking back was tempting, but I managed to rally around and get a grip!

We were once told that the 6-week and 6-month markers after moving here would be the roughest.  Well, I have to say that our 6th month has certainly been that, yet through it all we have seen God's hand and His blessings too.  We came here with such set ideas of what we were "going to do for God" and how it would all unfold, but I have been constantly reminded that writing our plans in ink is pointless and usually God has different, better ideas in mind!  Our hearts are open to whatever God wants for us to do here, but His will is not clear at the moment and we are just learning to wait on Him and learn all that He wants us to learn on the journey.  The challenges and struggles of this life are many, but I have been so encouraged in the last few weeks by 2 Corinthians 16-18, "So we do not lose heart.......for this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison...!"  We are both learning so much through our separate studies, Nelson at seminary and myself at BSF.  We have been attending a new church in the last few weeks and have also had such blessing from wonderful teaching there.   The older boys have started going to the youth group and Brady to Sunday School, and they are all enjoying getting to know new friends.

Work for Nelson has turned a corner and has begun to pick up, for which we are very grateful, but would value your continued prayers for his arm, as he has his good days and really bad days, with lots of ibuprofen!  We are praying about other career paths, but for now we are just so blessed to have a more steady income coming in.  We have had to make the very difficult decision not to return in July for my family reunion, but in many ways it felt to soon emotionally for all of us, as we have yet to feel truly at home and established here.  We will be saving up our pennies (actually there are no pennies in Oz, just nickels, so we'll save those!) to come back for a visit as soon as we can.  We miss our families and friends so much, but are so grateful for Skype!

Well, there is no more news to relay at this point, but I will keep you posted!  Thanks for those of you who have sent me loving messages of support and prayer.  It means so much to know there are so many at home who love us and continue to pray!
